A sentencing hearing for a man suspected of seriously assaulting another man on George Street 1 1/2 years ago has been set for later this month.

Jake Long was in Newfoundland Supreme Court in St. John’s Monday when his case was called during arraignments.

Long's lawyer, Jeff Brace, and Crown prosecutor Sheldon Steeves agreed to set the hearing for Sept. 28, at which time an agreed statement of facts will be presented.

Long, 20 — who is in custody — pleaded guilty in April to aggravated assault stemming from an incident that happened March 23, 2014, when Long reportedly stabbed a 36-year-old man on the popular downtown street.

The last time Long's case was called in court in June, there had been some dispute between the sides as to how the incident happened.

However, now with an agreement, a hearing could be set.

Steeves has indicated he plans to present evidence at the hearing, including surveillance video from a pizza parlour on George Street. The assault allegedly took place outside the pizza place.

The stabbing drew much media attention at the time.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Sources told The Telegram at the time that one of the stab wounds just missed piercing a major artery in his heart.

When Long was taken into police custody, he reportedly became irate and damaged property at RNC headquarters.

Long had been released on bail following a bail hearing in April 2014, but was taken back to jail Jan. 7, 2015, reportedly for breaching bail conditions.

He’s been behind bars since then.
