Filmmaker Nik Sexton won a Canadian Comedy Award Sunday for “How to be Deadly,” and dedicated it to his late uncle, Tommy Sexton

Filmmaker Nik Sexton is dedicating the Canadian Comedy Award his movie “How to be Deadly” won Sunday night to someone who knew the value of humour — his late uncle, Tommy.

“Thanks to everyone who made this film a reality,” Sexton wrote on Facebook Monday morning. “This is for Tommy Sexton.”

Tommy was an actor and comedian, best known as a member of Codco, died in 1993.

“How to be Deadly,” starring Leon Parsons as Donnie Dumphy — a YouTube sensation before the film was made — won the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Feature Film during a ceremony in Toronto, almost exactly a year after it took home the Atlantic Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Feature.

“This Hour Has 22 Minutes” was one of the biggest winners of the night, earning trophies for Best TV Show, Best Direction in a TV Series or Special (Michael Lewis and Vivieno Caldinelli), Best Writing in a TV Series or Special (locals Mark Critch and Cathy Jones along with 12 others), and Best Male Performance in a TV Show or Special (Shaun Majumder).

Local filmmaker Jordan Canning was presented with the award for Best Direction in a Web Series for “Space Riders: Division Earth,” which also took the award for Best Web Series, Best Male Performance in a Web Series (Mark Little) and Best Female Performance in a Web Series (Layla Lorette).
