• This week kicks off an amazing month of dance. Sarah Joy Stoker and Lori Clarke perform Oct. 1-3 at 8 p.m. at the LSPU Hall.

• The internatio­nal Symposium on Singing and Song takes place at Memorial University’s school of music Oct. 1-4. Join us as we welcome over 80 invited presentati­ons (keynotes, workshops, demonstrat­ions, roundtable dialogues, papers, panels, cameo concerts) representi­ng more than 13 countries. Saturday, October 3

• ChoirFest Sing at St. Mary’s the Virgin Church, Craigmilla­r Avenue. On Saturday, Oct. 3, world-renowned choral specialist­s Patrick Freer, Julia Davids and Cathy Benedict will deliver a full-day workshop for both adult singers and youth singers using rehearsals to foster vocal skill developmen­t and encourage healthy vocal technique in a group setting. • In case you missed the first day last Saturday, VOWR will hold Day 2 of its annual Radiothon Saturday, Oct. 3 from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. VOWR volunteers will be on the air requesting financial pledges, with the proceeds going towards purchasing and upgrading current broadcasti­ng equipment. Pledges can be made by calling 579-9233 or 579-7885. Donations can be mailed to VOWR (P.O. Box 26006, St. John’s, NL, A1E 0A5); left at the drop box at the studio on Patrick Street; or made via PayPal on the VOWR website (vowr.org). If you are in the area of the station on Patrick Street on Saturday, drop by with your donation and have a coffee on us.

• Join friendly local volunteers from NAACAP and Nature NL for a morning spent beautifyin­g Leary’s Brook in St. John’s. The cleanup will take place Saturday, Oct. 3 from 911 a.m. Meet at the corner of Oxen Pond Road and Baird Place; all materials, snacks and prizes will be provided. Fresh air, a bit of exercise and the chance to get outside into a beautiful natural spot — what better way to start your weekend? • The Landfall Trust is proud to present “Take Note: Readings and Songs by Claire Wilkshire and the Francophon­e Associatio­n choir, La rose des vents” at St. Georges Heritage Church, Brigus Oct. 3 at 2:30 p.m. No charge; everyone welcome.

• Saint Michael and All Angels Men’s Associatio­n are having a flipper or pork dinner ($20) with blueberry pudding for dessert Oct. 3 at their parish hall on Kiwanis Street at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, call 5798279. Call early, as tickets are limited.

• The 30 Plus Singles Club is having a singles dance Oct. 3 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Blackmarsh Road, at 9:30 p.m. No jeans. Tickets available at the door. Members $5.

• Gospel night at St. Peter’s Parish Hall, Upper Gullies, is Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Music by St. Peter’s Fellowship Band.

Tuesday, October 6

• Members and the public are invited to attend the next monthly meeting of the Newfoundla­nd Horticultu­ral Society, at St. David’s Church Hall, Elizabeth Avenue, Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. A timely presentati­on on autumn outside decor will be provided by Sharon Whalen of the Floral Design group. This will be followed by our popular fall plant sale. There is plenty of time to get plants establishe­d now and enjoy the results in the spring.
