• Once again a fundraising dance has been organized for VOWR by one of its supporters. The dance will be held at the Knights of Columbus Building on St. Clare Avenue Oct. 9. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, available by calling 746-9311 or 7442255. You can also pick them up at Ropar Footware, in the Bowring Building at 277 Water St.
• Safe and Sound is a benefit concert to end youth homelessness in support of Choices for Youth. On Oct. 9 at the Breezeway, join us for an all-ages show featuring two-time Juno Award nominee Jeremy Fisher, with locally renowned Steve Maloney and Lady Brett Ashley. All proceeds with go directly to CFY to help young people make safer, more positive life choices. • St. John the Evangelist Church in Coley’s Point will hold a Thanksgiving breakfast Oct. 10 from 8-11 a.m. at the hall in Coley’s Point. We are serving eggs, toutons, baked beans, home fries, bologna, toast, tea/coffee. You won’t go away hungry. For more information, call Debbie at 7860555.
• Memorial University’s faculty of medicine is hosting a public exhibition of professor of anatomy Dr. Shakti Chandra’s magnificent collection of anatomical specimens created for teaching. Entitled “Body Works,” the exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to view real bones and organs and appreciate the connectedness of the human body. There will be stations featuring artificial joints, healthy and damaged lungs, a heart with a coronary bypass, a cirrhotic liver and whole bodies on display. Free admission. • Dance the Night Away Fundraiser — Dance for Haiti. There will be an adult dance at the Re-Max Centre Oct. 10 at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10/person; tickets can be purchased at the door. This is a fundraising dance to support a family in northern Haiti, as well as 16 school-age children. For further information, call 749-5383 or 6824347.
• Topsail United Church annual Harvest Festival Celebrations, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m.-12 noon, morning coffee with desserts cost $5, also sale of baked goods, preserves and crafts. • The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor parks and recreation department will hold the 15th annual Red Maple Festival from Oct. 23 to Nov. 5. • Tillandsia (Air Plant) Workshop will be held at MUN Botanical Garden Oct. 13 from 7-8:30 p.m. Fee: $35 public/$30 FOG. Pre-registration is required; space is limited. Todd Boland, research horticulturist, will introduce you to the fascinating world of Tillandsia: plants that grow without soil. All participants will create their own tillandsia display to take home. • The Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador is offering a learning series for caregivers, family, friends and people living with Alzheimer disease or related dementia’s beginning Oct. 14. The sessions in the learning series will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of dementia, coping strategies, legal and financial help, day-to-day care, resources and support systems. This series is of no cost to participants, and is available in person, by phone or video by use of Skype anywhere across the province. • It has been 50 years since the Class of 1965 left Holy Heart. A meet and greet will be held Oct. 17 from 1-4 p.m. at the auditorium of Our Lady of Mercy School. • Wesley Church fall fair week kicks off Oct. 17 with a brunch (10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) and usual sale tables (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) all at a cost of $12.
• Once again the three St. John’s city libraries are coming together to present youth in the St John’s area with an opportunity to share … “Share a Scare.” We are hosting our 7th annual ghost story writing contest with celebrity judge Caighlan Smith (young adult author of “Hallow Hour,” “New Year” and “Firefly”).
