Changes to the levy greatly appreciated

-

Thank you, Premier Dwight Ball for your Liberal government’s recent decision to drop the deficit reduction levy tax on Newfoundland and Labrador citizens whose income is up to $50,000 annually.

Many citizens greatly respect your decision on this issue and regard your actions as democratic and compassionate.

A recalibration that also lowers the levy from $600 to $100 from those earning up to $55,000 annually and $750 to $700 from anyone earning up to $100,000 annually while slightly raising the levy on those earning over $100,000 annually and doubling the levy on those earning over $625,000 annually is indicative of compassionate capitalism.

By lowering taxes on the working and middle class who make up the overwhelming majority of citizens, a government will stimulate increased consumer spending that will increase private sector profits and likely create more private sector jobs. Increased profits for mostly upper-middle-class business owners will likely negate the slightly higher levy they will now pay and our government will likely attain more revenue from an overall expanding private sector.

Federal Minister Judy Foote was an imperative emissary between Premier Ball and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by attaining suspension of monthly payments on equalization and repayable floor loan provincial payments that will allow our province to retain $267 million until instalment payments commence in 2022.

One week before it was axed, Mount Pearl Southlands MHA Paul Lane exhibited courage and insightfulness in advocating the deficit reduction levy be eliminated upon those earning less than $50,000 annually.
