Memorial’s Snow named AUS MVP
She’s among eight Memorial v-ballers and hoopsters to earn conference honours
Jill Snow of the Memorial Sea-hawks has been named the 2016-17 Atlantic University Sport women’s volleyball most valuable player. Snow was just one of a number of Memorial athletes who received AUS honours Thursday on the eve of the conference’s women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball championships.
The Sea-hawks are competing in all three.
Memorial Sea-hawks outside hitter Jill Snow is the Atlantic University Sport AUS) women’s volleyball most valuable player for a second consecutive year.
An education student from Bishop’s Falls, Snow wrapped up her fifth and final collegiate regular season as the conference’s leader in kills (273), kills per set (3.69), service aces (32), points (322.5) and points per set (4.4).
Snow appeared in all 20 matches and 74 sets for the Sea-hawks, who finished second in the standings with a 14-6 record.
“Jill Snow is an incredible student-athlete,” said Sea-hawks head coach John Slauenwhite. “Jill has been working towards her master of education while substitute teaching and training with the team every day. She is a very humble athlete … always puts her team before herself and helps lift up everyone around her to another level.
“As her coach, it has been a pleasure to see her commitment and competitiveness turn her into one of the premier players in the AUS and Usports.”
In addition to being selected as the AUS MVP, Snow earned a place on the AUS first all-star squad for a third straight year.
Joining Snow on the first team is second-year Sea-hawk Maiya Westwood, while their Memorial teammates Kierstin Fey and Kassandra Menzies are secondteam selections.
The honours for Snow and her teammates were announced Thursday night on the eve of the AUS women’s volleyball championships in Halifax. That city is also site of the conference men’s and women’s basketball championships beginning today, and awards in those divisions were also revealed Thursday.
In women’s basketball, the Sea-hawks’ Sydney Stewart was chosen a firstteam all-star team, while her teammate, Brooklynn Wright, is the 2016-17 AUS nominee for the Usports (national collegiate) Tracy Macleod Award, given to a women’s basketball player who demonstrates determination, perseverance and unwavering spirit to continue playing the game of basketball.

Ont., Wright sustained a torn ACL during her first season, worked hard at recovery and has become a mainstay for Memorial, averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 rebounds this season
“Brook had to sit out her first year and await surgery that spring,” said Memorial head coach Mark English. “She was away from her family and it was a tough season for her. She had her surgery and went through the long, painstaking recovery process.
“She could have taken the easy road and stayed home after this devastating injury, but she didn’t.
“Brooklynn has overcome adversity in order to develop into the player she always had the potential to be. She has become a role model to her teammates and to all studentathletes.”
In men’s basketball, Memorial post Vasilije Curcic was named a second-team all-star for the third time in his career, while Nathan Barker of Massey Drive outside Corner Brook was a selection to the AUS all-rookie team.
