School Sports hands out handware
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador honoured its athletic best for 2016-17 Friday night in St. John’s. Jasmine O’quinn of Belanger Memorial High in the Codroy Valley and John St. Croix from Stephenville High were named winners of the Bro. G.I. Moore athlete of the year awards.
O’quinn’s involvement in soccer, basketball, badminton, ball hockey and track and field led to provincial championship appearances 11 times in the last three years. She has been a member of the provincial championship soccer team and won two gold medals in individual events in track and field. Competing in cross-country running, track and field, indoor and outdoor soccer and cross-country skiing, St. Croix has been a driving force behind Stephenville High’s seven provincial championships and four silver medalwinning performances. He has represented the province at Atlantic and national competitions in cross-country skiing, soccer and squash. Runners-up for the awards were Shauna Slaney of St. Lawrence Academy, Charlotte Elliot of Stephenville High, George Kennedy of Roncalli Central High in Avondale and Zach Applin of Canon Richards Memorial in Flowers Cove.
Coaching Service Awards went to Craig Ralph of Glovertown Academy and Ed Turpin of Mealy Mountain Collegiate in Happy Valleygoose Bay, while Rosemary Ryan of St. Thomas Aquinas of Port au Port and Scott Bishop of Holy Name of Mary Academy in Lawn were awarded the Executive Service Awards. Winston Jenkins of J.M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate was given the Honour Award.
Regional Recognition Awards were given to Charlie Decker of St. John’s (various schools), Amy O’reilly of Avalon (Laval High), Gary Keough of Avalon West (St. Mark’s School), Lorna Pittman of Burin Peninsula (St. Lawrence Academy), Adam Howse of Central East (Glovertown Academy), William Mitchell of Central (John Watkins Academy), Andrew Bursey of Central West (Indian River High School), Karen Colbourne of Western (Belanger Memorial), Emma Genge of Northern Peninsula (Canon Richards Memorial), Verna Brown of Southern Labrador (St. Mary’s All-grade) and Nicole Mclean of Northern (Amos Comenius Memorial).
