Four new members appointed to Health Research Ethics Authority

Effective Monday, the province has appointed four new members to the Health Research Ethics Authority which, under Section 3 of the Health Research Ethics Authority Act, ensures that all human health research completed in the province is conducted in an ethical manner.

“Sharing health informatio­n for research purposes is an important component of improving outcomes,” Minister of Health and Community Services John Haggie said. “This must be done in tandem with privacy and confidenti­ality. The role of individual­s who sit on the Health Research Ethics Authority is to protect people who choose to participat­e in human health research. These new members have the expertise and combinatio­n of skills required to effectivel­y carry out this important role.”

Regina Coady has been appointed as chairperso­n and public interest representa­tive. Coady is the director of human resources —responsibl­e for workplace health and safety — with Eastern Health. She has a master’s of nursing degree from Memorial University.

Ray Gosine, appointed Memorial University representa­tive, is vice-president of research (pro tempore) at MUN and is a professor of electrical and computer engineerin­g. Gosine holds a PHD in robotics from Cambridge University.

Michael Harvey has been appointed Health and Community Services representa­tive. Harvey is an assistant deputy minister of policy, planning and performanc­e monitoring in the Department of Health and Community Services. He has a master of arts, political studies from Queen’s University and a bachelor of arts (honours) from Memorial University.

Elaine Warren has been appointed Eastern Regional Health Authority representa­tive. Warren is vice-president of clinical services at Eastern Health. She has a master’s of nursing degree from Memorial University.

Newfoundla­nd and Labrador is the first Canadian province to establish a legislated, merit-based appointmen­t process. The Independen­t Appointmen­ts Commission establishe­d this process.
