Four new members appointed to Health Research Ethics Authority
Effective Monday, the province has appointed four new members to the Health Research Ethics Authority which, under Section 3 of the Health Research Ethics Authority Act, ensures that all human health research completed in the province is conducted in an ethical manner.
“Sharing health information for research purposes is an important component of improving outcomes,” Minister of Health and Community Services John Haggie said. “This must be done in tandem with privacy and confidentiality. The role of individuals who sit on the Health Research Ethics Authority is to protect people who choose to participate in human health research. These new members have the expertise and combination of skills required to effectively carry out this important role.”
Regina Coady has been appointed as chairperson and public interest representative. Coady is the director of human resources —responsible for workplace health and safety — with Eastern Health. She has a master’s of nursing degree from Memorial University.
Ray Gosine, appointed Memorial University representative, is vice-president of research (pro tempore) at MUN and is a professor of electrical and computer engineering. Gosine holds a PHD in robotics from Cambridge University.
Michael Harvey has been appointed Health and Community Services representative. Harvey is an assistant deputy minister of policy, planning and performance monitoring in the Department of Health and Community Services. He has a master of arts, political studies from Queen’s University and a bachelor of arts (honours) from Memorial University.
Elaine Warren has been appointed Eastern Regional Health Authority representative. Warren is vice-president of clinical services at Eastern Health. She has a master’s of nursing degree from Memorial University.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the first Canadian province to establish a legislated, merit-based appointment process. The Independent Appointments Commission established this process.
