A man suspected of killing a North River man three years ago has been freed from jail.

Daniel Leonard was released Thursday at Newfoundland Supreme Court in St. John’s, a day after he was granted bail.

The 36-yearold and Allan Potter, 53, were arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Dale Porter, who was found outside his home in the Conception Bay North town in June 2014. The 36-yearold had been stabbed several times and later died in hospital.

Leonard and Potter, who remains in jail, were originally charged with second-degree murder, but after further police investigation and review of the case by the Crown’s office, the charges were upgraded in February to first-degree murder.

Leonard faces an additional charge of accessory after the fact.

Both men are due back in provincial court in Harbour Grace on Nov. 20 for the start of their preliminary inquiry.

Leonard was represented by John Duggan at the bail hearing, but has Bob Buckingham as counsel for the inquiry. Potter’s lawyers are Jon Noonan and Randy Piercey.

A trial date has not yet been set.
