Challenge Cup Crusaders look to stay hot
Holy Cross Kirby Group will be looking for a seventh straight win when the Molson Challenge Cup soccer team takes on Mount Pearl First Choice Haircutters Saturday afternoon at the Gushue Complex. Their six-game winning run has vaulted the Crusaders — who had won only one of its first seven contests to start the season — into second place in the Challenge Cup standings, six points behind the first-place St. Lawrence Labatt Laurentians. However, Holy Cross has two games in hand on the defending champion Laurentians. During its hot streak, Holy Cross posted three victories over last-place Corner Brook Steers Insurance, two over the Canada Games team and another over the C.B.S. First Choice Strikers.
The latest win was a 3-1 decision over the Gerry O’brien Financial Games team Wednesday night at King George V Park.
The Games team could at least claim a minor victory in having registered a goal against Holy Cross. In its five previous contests, Holy Cross had outscored its opposition 23-0.
