Furlong goes wire-to-wire at Wilds

Golfer Mike Furlong is The Telegram sports department’s choice as Athlete of the Week.

Furlong, from the Bally Haly Golf and Country Club, sailed to the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador amateur golf championsh­ip at The Wilds at Salmonier, leading the field from start to finish. Furlong finished the tournament with a two-over par 72 Wednesday, ending with a 218 total (two over par) and 10 strokes ahead of the field. Furlong will represent Newfoundla­nd on the provincial Willingdon Cup team at the Canadian men’s amateur championsh­ip in Mississaug­a, Ont., next month, along with Nathan Peters of Bally Haly and Nikashante­ss Penashue of the Amaruk club in Happy-valley Goose Bay.
