Furlong goes wire-to-wire at Wilds
Golfer Mike Furlong is The Telegram sports department’s choice as Athlete of the Week.
Furlong, from the Bally Haly Golf and Country Club, sailed to the Newfoundland and Labrador amateur golf championship at The Wilds at Salmonier, leading the field from start to finish. Furlong finished the tournament with a two-over par 72 Wednesday, ending with a 218 total (two over par) and 10 strokes ahead of the field. Furlong will represent Newfoundland on the provincial Willingdon Cup team at the Canadian men’s amateur championship in Mississauga, Ont., next month, along with Nathan Peters of Bally Haly and Nikashantess Penashue of the Amaruk club in Happy-valley Goose Bay.
