The crowds were cheering on the resilient runners of the 90th Tely 10 road race in St. John’s on Sunday morning.

Men and woman of all ages participated, and were highfiving, and chest-bumping as they crossed the finish line.

One runner stood out amongst the pack. Dressed in a tuxedo and running sneakers, Joe Ryan celebrated his 45th year of running the Tely 10.

“It’s my 45th race, I knew I had to do something special,” said Ryan. “I love seeing people’s reactions when they see me running in my tuxedo.”

This is Ryan’s second time running the race in a tuxedo — the previous time was for his 35th run.

Julie Dywer and her dad, Jim Dwyer, ran this year’s race together. Although Julie was in a bit of pain from an injury, she managed to earn her personal best time.

“The Tely crowd made it really enjoyable, but I was in pain near the end of the run for sure,” said Julie.

The Dwyers will be running the Reykjavik Marathon in Iceland together in just a few weeks.

“My dad keeps me going,” Julie said.

The River Runners from the Gander area use the annual road race as a weekend getaway.

“Some of us have been running the race for over 10 years,” said Michelle Mesh of the River Runners. “Now we get to drink beer and eat chicken wings.”

Murdock Hiscock from Fortune, crossed the finish line first in the men’s 75-79 age group.

“I believe I made a record for my age category,” said Hiscock. “That’s what my friends are telling me, but I’ll have to wait and see.”

The official registration for Sunday’s race was 4,811. Of that number, 4,213 showed up at Sunday’s start line.
