Diver dies off Bell Island

A man airlifted to hospital Sunday has been pronounced dead.

Bell Island and Holyrood RCMP say that a man who was airlifted by a Search and Rescue helicopter to the Health Sciences Centre has been pronounced dead.

The 62-year-old diver, who experience­d trouble in Lance Cove, off Bell Island, Sunday morning was declared dead a short time later.

A spokesman for the Joint Rescue Coordinati­on Centre in Halifax says the Cormorant and the inshore rescue boat based in the area responded to a call of an unresponsi­ve diver at about 11 a.m. The chopper landed at the Health Sciences Centre helipad at about 11:40 and transferre­d the patient to a waiting ambulance to be taken to the hospital

The man’s death is not considered suspicious. The RCMP is continuing its investigat­ion.
