Bronze for NL in Eastern Canadian cricket
Host Newfoundland and Labrador finished third in the 2017 Eastern Canadian (T-20) cricket championship, which concluded Sunday at the RCAF Field in St. John’s. Newfoundland had a 2-2 record in the tourney, with the losses coming against Nova Scotia and Quebec, who would go on to meet in the final. It marked the second straight year that Newfoundland took the bronze medal in the event. Newfoundland captain Rahul Vashishta was named tournament MVP. He made scores of 100, 51, 70 and 66 for a total of 287 runs.
Quebec’s Shayed Ahmed and Suresh Ramkisson were named best bastman and bowler, respectively.
A 219-215 preliminary-round loss to the Nova Scotians was particularly tough for the Newfoundlanders. In what essentially was a semifinal game, Nova Scotia rallied to win on its last over.
The Nova Scotians went on to meet defending champion Quebec for the championship, avenging a preliminary-round loss with a 162-134 win in the final.
This marked the first time Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the Eastern Canadian tourney, which also involved teams from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
