Water damage repairs to go on for weeks at hospital
Burst fifth-floor water pipe causes havoc at St. Clare’s over the weekend
Cleanup and repairs are ongoing at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s after a burst water pipe Saturday evening caused water damage to several areas in the centre block of the hospital.
The burst pipe occurred in a fifth-floor staff washroom.
The water damage caused Eastern Health to temporarily restrict regular visitation and to reduce emergency service at the site Saturday night.
On Sunday, access to the inpatient units within the hospital was restricted to the main elevators only (in the main entrance) or to the stairwell next to the main elevators until midnight Sunday.
A news release noted that clients and visitors to the hospital will encounter some congestion in the coming weeks as repairs are made to a number of areas that experienced water damage, particularly in the main registration and clinical waiting areas east of the main entrance.
Eastern Health says it will make every effort to accommodate clients awaiting clinical appointments, while ensuring their safety, in all affected areas.
Of note are that mammography appointments for Monday have been postponed, as cleanup is completed in that area. Clients will be contacted directly by Eastern Health regarding the re-scheduling of these appointments.
