Kiewit Offshore Services awarded contract
Just as Husky Energy did with the Hebron project, construction of the topsides modules for the $2.2-billion West White Rose project will take place outside the province.
Just as Husky Energy did with the Hebron project, construction of the topsides modules for the $2.2-billion West White Rose project will take place outside the province.
Kiewit Corp. was awarded the contract to build the topsides — consisting of the operational components like drilling facilities, wellheads and other technical equipment — at its 400-acre fabrication yard in Ingleside, Texas.
Hebron’s Derrick Equipment Set and the utilities process module, major components of the project’s topsides, were fabricated in South Korea.
Work is expected to begin in 2018.
Other bidders were Cooeckvaerner Consortium, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.
Once the topsides are complete, Dockwise Shipping has the contract to transport the topsides to Newfoundland, where they will be transferred to the Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest construction vessel designed specifically for work in the offshore oil and gas industry.
The topsides, along with the living quarters being built at Kiewit’s Marystown yard, will be transported to the field, where they will be connected to the concrete gravity structure, which is being fabricated at a purpose-built dry dock in Argentia.
First oil from West White Rose is anticipated in 2022.
