Telegram’s Singnl winner Rachel Cousins vying for two awards
Musicnl releases list of nominees for 2017 awards
Singnl youth winner Rachel Cousins is among the local musicians nominated for multiple 2017 Musicnl awards.
Musicnl released its list of nominees for this year’s awards Thursday, and Cousins, 16, is vying for two: one for Female Artist of the Year and the other for Rising Star of the Year.
It’s a big week for Cousins, who also released her debut album, “This Fire,” at the JAG hotel in St. John’s Thursday night.
Cousins is one of a number of acts with multiple nominations: Janet Cull, Ian Foster, The Once and Steve Maloney all earned five Musicnl nominations each, while others with several nods include The Kubasonics, Earle and Coffin, Clare Follett and Gavin Simms.
“Competition was fierce this year, with over 250 award applications in 24 categories,” said Glenda Tulk, Musicnl’s executive director.
Musicnl Week, happening Oct. 11-15, will see a number of performances, workshops, panels and other events, as well as the attendance of 25 export buyers from around North America and the U.K. — brought in by Musicnl as part of a new export development program — who will work with local musicians to help prepare them for an international career.
This year’s awards will be handed out Oct. 15 during a gala at the St. John’s Convention Centre, hosted by Alan Doyle.
This year marks the organization’s 25th anniversary.
“This year will be the biggest and most memorable Musicnl Week to date,” Tulk has said previously.
Musicnl members will now have the opportunity to cast their votes for the award winners.
