Location for new C.B.S. library announced
Conception Bay South’s new public library will be built just off Remembrance Square near the town hall, it was announced Wednesday.
The intent is that the 8,000-square-foot building will serve as a library for at least 50 years, according to a news release. Its proposed opening is in the fall of 2019.
Calvin Taylor, chair of the Provincial Information and Library Resources Board, said they’re excited to work on the project.
“Once completed, families will certainly be happy to see a new modern library that meets the changing needs of users. It will undoubtedly provide for the continued growth and success of our young people,” he stated.
In a news release, Opposition Leader Paul Davis, the MHA Topsail-paradise, and Conception Bay South MHA Barry Petten said the Education minister’s announcement about the C.B.S. library was embarrassingly short on details, timelines and budget information.
“People walked away disappointed that the minister didn’t show up with specific details to announce about the library project that the community has been pushing for,” Davis said.
“If the minister had been ready today to release the details people have been seeking, then everyone would have been able to understand the objective of the news conference. But to hold an announcement involving municipal officials in the middle of a municipal election campaign when there is nothing to announce is embarrassing to everyone involved.”
“Community residents want this library project to proceed and the benefits to flow,” Petten stated. “When the minister is not prepared to provide the basic details, it makes people wonder how ready he really is to move ahead on this project.”
