Family, car and camera in 1938
This week, a couple of wonderful old family snaps from nearly 80 years ago. As you will see by the text below, a member of the family would be interested in learning anything a reader might be able to add, such as where (and it must certainly be near St. john’s) the photographs may have been taken.
Hi Paul,
I am a recent follower of your Car Column and look for it every week. My genealogy hobby is evolving into a local history hobby and the pictures and stories in your column help with that. These two pictures are in our family collection and I thought you might be interested. Fortunately, my aunt wrote the names and date (1938) on the back of the pictures.
I cannot identify the year or make of the car. Nor can I identify where the pictures were taken. I looked around the immediate St. John's area, comparing the hills in the background with local topography and did not see any obvious match. My ancestors lived in downtown St. John's, so I wonder how far outside St. John's could a family go for an outing in 1938? My grandparents were John and Anastasia (Flynn) Angel and they were joined on this day by their daughter Nellie Angel Chaytor and her husband Greg Chaytor and my grandmother’s sister, Alice Flynn Furlong and her husband Peter Furlong.
I assume that Nellie Angel Chaytor (Aunt Nellie) took the pictures. Thanks for the interest, Pat Angel, St. John’s
