What if kids ran the government?

- BY PAULA GRAHAM

Paula Graham asks: What if kids were city planners? What would the speed limit be? And would we grow gardens, not lawns?

What if kids were city planners? What would the speed limit be?

And would we grow gardens, not lawns?

What if a toddler was the Premier?

What colour would their campaign signs be? And how much would they pay themselves?

Would they allow other Members of the House to be breastfed while in session? What if children ran the Ministry of Finance?

What would they cut to balance the budget?

And would they hire a male secretary?

Would kids measure GDP, or would they survey love?

If your child was in charge today, would they change the voting age? And would your kid be in favour of progressive taxation?

If babies held a public budget consultation, would it be on a bus route? Would it be wheelchair accessible, and would all the facilitators be white?

If babies held a public budget consultation, would it be on a bus route? Would it be wheelchair accessible, and would all the facilitators be white?

What if an infant was Minister of the Environment? Would they mind getting dirty?

Would they sell off land that wasn’t theirs?

Would they read astrology and gaze at a full moon?

How many jobs would babies think justified spoiling an ecosystem? What if kids ran the Ministry of Health?

What would they say to the grownups with no health insurance?

How many jobs would babies think justified spoiling an ecosystem?

And if grownups got sick from pollution, how much compensation would kids think is fair?

What if your baby was a provincial court judge?

What formula would they use to calculate jail terms, and would reputation be one of the variables?

If children were treated as credible witnesses, would they report domestic violence?

Would kids put sick people in jail?

Would they befriend refugees, or would they be suspicious of immigrants?

What if toddlers told grown-ups “there’s nothing we can do, it’s the economy”?

And what if the grown-ups grew down thinking that this is the way things have to be?

If children ran the government, would they put their offices high on a hill? And would they build doors big enough for the grown-ups to fit through?
