Walsh, Pretty earn Sea-hawks honours

-

Soccer players Sydney Walsh and Alex Pretty are the latest Memorial University varsity athletes of the week. Walsh, an engineering student from St. John’s and rookie goalkeeper for the Seahawks’ women’ side, recorded two shutouts on the road over the weekend, first in a win over the University of Prince Edward Island and then in a scoreless draw with the Acadia Axewomen.

In all, she had 14 saves in the two games.

Walsh has recorded five straight shutouts and leads the AUS conference with eight on the season.

Pretty, a fifth-year psychology student from St. John’s, turned in a strong defensive effort for Memorial men’s team, which lost 2-1 to Acadia after a scoreless draw with UPEI.

Head coach Jake Stanford cited the on-field leadership of Pretty, who was named MVP of the Challenge Cup playoffs and a league all-star earlier this year as he helped Holy Cross to a provincial senior men’s soccer title.
