If you live in St. John’s and were planning to bring your vehicle to Walmart for a winter tire changeover this year, you’ll want to do so before Nov. 15.

Walmart Canada is closing the tire and lube express centres at its three St. John’s locations — Stavanger Drive, Kelsey Drive and off Old Placentia Road in Mount Pearl.

In an email to The Telegram, Alex Robertson, senior director of corporate affairs, says the closures “allow us to focus on our core business and serving our store customers.”

In addition to clothing and footwear, furniture, housewares, electronics and other general merchandise, Walmart has been increasing its stock of groceries in recent years.

Similar closures have already taken place elsewhere in Canada.

Sixteen people in St. John’s are affected by the decision, all of whom have been offered a severance package or other positions within the company, Robertson says.

Walmart locations in Corner Brook and Gander will retain their tire and lube shops.
