Women’s almanac celebrates activism, feminism
The St. John’s Status of Women Council (SJSOWC) is partnering with Breakwater Books for the second year in a row to produce the 2018 women’s almanac.
SJSOWC executive director Jenny Wright says this edition will be all about recording activism and feminism.
“We’re starting to move away from typical day planners because of cellphones,” said Wright. “So this year we wanted to do things a little bit differently, by using the day planner to record your activism and what you did throughout the year to promote change.”
The almanac — titled “A Woman’s Almanac: Your Guide to Feminism, Activism and Change” — will include entries from some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most prominent women, most of them giving “fem hacks” for their trades.
“Toni Marie Wiseman has been a journalist for 28 years,” said Wright. “She gave amazing tips for young women who are coming up through the industry.”
There are many inspiration pieces of writing about women who came into their own activism, including women who found their own feminism within Indigenous lands.
The book will also list all names and numbers of organ- izations serving women in the province.
“There’s something for everyone,” said Wright. “There’s an adult colouring book with a few curse words for when you need to let out some frustration.”
The 2018 women’s almanac is ready for pre-order through www.breakwaterbooks.com.
Wright says it’s a win-win Christmas present, with the royalties contributing to programs through the SJSOWC, which advocate for gender equality and justice in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“It’s such a useful tool, but it’s also super saucy and a lot of fun,” said Wright.
