Girlie gets adopted
A senior beagle cross in N.L. finally finds a family
After over two years of being moved between Beagle Paws in St. John’s, Terra Nova Kennels on Roaches Line and various homes around the city, Girlie, a beagle cross, has found her fur-ever home.
“We hit it off right off the bat,” said Ken Wells of Mount Pearl. “God love her.”
Wells saw a story posted online last year, that Girlie would be spending another Christmas without a family to call her own.
He scheduled visits with Girlie for the next few weeks, and then decided he would take her home for the holidays.
“When we went to go pick her up it was one of the stormiest nights of the year,” said Wells. “My boss even offered to let me take the plow.”
Sandra Woito runs the foster care program for Beagle Paws, she says that Girlie hasn’t had an easy life.
“We had no history on her,” said Woito. “She’s an older girl who came to us from another shelter as a stray.”
She was Beagle Paws longest resident, says Woito, and at over 10 years old, she was a difficult dog to place in a home.
“She picks and chooses her friends,” she laughed. “That’s what I always like to say.”
Girlie gets along with people and children, but not other animals, says Wells.
“When the day comes and she finds out that she’s an animal herself, I don’t know what we’re going to do,” he laughed.
Wells told The Telegram that before meeting Girlie he had been warned about her behavioral issues.
“All I could say was that there’s no dog that bad,” he said.
Girlie is a sweetheart, says Wells, and hasn’t been too much of a problem.
“She hasn’t gotten me arrested yet,” he said. “But she’s trying.”
Girlie is known to get herself into mischief, which was difficult for a lot of families, but not for Wells.
“I loves it,” he said. “Whenever she gets into mischief I just call it another one of Girlies adventures.”
Woito says that Wells is one of Beagle Paws biggest supporters, and always keeps the group updated on Girlies latest adventures.
“We always say there’s a home out there for every dog,” said Woito. “Some just take longer than others.”
