Third person struck by cab
Two women, one man hit by taxis in downtown St. John’s in less than 24 hours
For the third time in less than twenty-four hours, a pedestrian was struck by a taxi in the downtown area of St. John’s Saturday night.
It was confirmed on scene that a woman was struck by the taxi at the intersection of Prince of Wales Street and Fitzpatrick Avenue as she was crossing the street on a crosswalk about midnight Saturday.
When The Telegram arrived, one of the victim’s shoes was lying under the taxi and a cellphone was sitting on the lower windshield of the cab. Some of her belongings were also left on the pavement between the crosswalk and the spot where the taxi came to a stop about 10 metres away.
Accident investigation officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were on hand documenting the scene in the rain, taking photos and spray-painting points on the wet street. The driver of the taxi, an older man, could also be seen sitting in the rear of a police cruiser giving a statement to an RNC patrol officer. The victim, a 20-year-old woman, was taken to hospital by Eastern Health paramedics, but an official on scene told The Telegram the victim’s injuries did not appear lifethreatening.
Two other pedestrians hit
Early Saturday morning, two other people walking in the downtown area were struck by two different taxis at two separate locations.
A man had to be taken to hospital early Saturday morning after he was struck by a taxi on New Gower Street. He was struck at the crosswalk in front of St. John’s City Hall in the eastbound lane just before 1 a.m.
The taxi driver and a number of onlookers tended to the victim as they waited for paramedics and firefighters to arrive. The victim, who was conscious and talking to paramedics, was immobilized and placed on a stretcher to be taken to hospital. An official on scene said the man’s injuries did not appear life-threatening.
In a second taxi-pedestrian collision at about 3:30 a.m., another cab from a different company apparently struck a woman on Cavendish Square in front of the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The woman was also taken to hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.
All incidents are under investigation by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
