Cortney Lake’s family to light tree in her honour

-

The holiday season will certainly be a dark one for the family of Cortney Lake, the Mount Pearl woman who has been missing since June and is suspected to have been murdered.

“Christmas will no doubt be very difficult,” Glenda Power, Lake’s aunt, told The Telegram in an email Tuesday.

But they’re hoping to add some light this week.

On Thursday, Lake’s family will light a tree in her memory at St. David’s Park in Mount Pearl, marking her favourite time of year.

“Cortney’s Tree” will remain lit throughout Christmas to honour her and, with its purple lights, serve as a reminder of the impacts of violence against women, stated a news release issued on behalf of the family.

A special presentation will be made to the St. John’s Women’s Centre. The public is invited to attend.

The event will begin at 6:15 p.m. with a Christmas carol sing-a-long. Tim Hortons on Old Placentia Road will provide hot chocolate at the park.

Everyone attending is encouraged to bring their recyclable mugs and wear Santa hats or other festive attire for this special community event.

Meanwhile, Power said the family still hopes to find Lake’s remains to give her a proper burial.

“We remain resolute in our mission to find Cortney and will continue searching as long as we can before winter sets in,” Power said.
