A Stutz here, some 55 years ago

-

We have had a few articles (photos and emails) over the past several columns on the great old Stutz, both the Bearcat and the straight-eight sedan. The original Stutz ceased production in 1936 but there was a resurrection of the brand in the late 1960s. See Wikipedia, Stutz. The 1970s “remake” was nothing less than spectacular (to view, anyway; we don’t know what it was like to operate.)

Here’s another Stutz surprise:

Hi Paul,

n reference to your article of this car I was a salesman travelling around the island and in 1962 or 1963, I had Bill Bennett of Gander Aviation fly me to Fogo Island (no ferry back then) we landed in the harbour at Seldom and engaged Mr. Rowe in his pristine 52 Chev to taxi me around the island. I had tour of his garage and a viewing of his Stutz Bearcat! This was in late March or early April. He did not start the car (he had it winterized) but he assured me it was in running condition. I heard he sold it and it was transported by boat to Lewisporte. It was a stylish and expensivelooking car. Great automobile articles.

Thanks Doug. Surprising to hear a Stutz Bearcat had found its way to Fogo Island. We’re guessing that, as it was shipped out of Lewisporte it went to a buyer somewhere in Canada or the U.S. Do we know where it went?
