The Salmonid Associatio­n of Eastern Newfoundla­nd’s annual dinner and auction will take place at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s. Isle of Demons

Robert Chafe’s “Isle of Demons” is onstage at the LSPU Hall. The story of Marguerite de Roberval — marooned by her uncle on an island off northern Newfoundla­nd in 1542 for daring to love a sailor. Neverthele­ss, she persisted. This acclaimed production from Persistenc­e Theatre Company moves to the LSPU Hall after a sold-out September run at the Barbara Barrett Theatre. Starring Marie Jones, Allison Kelly and Evan Mercer, with direction by Alix Reynolds. Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet

Tickets are available for the Mother’s Day brunch buffet on Sunday, May 13, which supports education work at The Fluvarium. There will be seatings at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. After your meal, families will be invited to visit the exhibits or join our educators for stories, crafts and feeding time. Cost for the event is $26.50 for adults and $14.50 for children ages 10 and

VOWR Guest Interview: Barbara De Land speaks with Chris Hollett, owner of Jiffy Taxis. The taxi business story in St. John’s is an interestin­g one, and is somewhat different from other cities and countries. Hollett has owned Jiffy Taxi Co. for the past two years and is a former part-time taxi driver, and he describes how it developed during his father’s ownership years, and now his own time of ownership. Caregivers get active with the little ones up to age five at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre’s active playgroup. Recreation staff will be on site to develop fundamenta­l movement skills and physical literacy through active play. Cost is $3 per child aged two to five. Children under age two can participat­e free of charge.

Artsnl is accepting online applicatio­ns from schools, school boards, or groups of schools to operate Artssmarts projects. Artssmarts provides funding to schools to bring profession­al artists into the classroom to help teachers and students integrate arts activities into non-arts subject areas. The program — designed for children aged two to four years old — features stories, songs, puppets, games and crafts for children and their guardian. The City of St. John’s, in partnershi­p with the MMSB and MUN Botanical Garden, are offering free backyard composting informatio­n sessions to residents of St. John’s. This approximat­ely one-hour session is at MUN Botanical Garden. You can purchase a standard compost bin for $50 or a tumbler bin for $75 (HST included). These sessions are for St. John’s residents only. You can attend a free backyard composting informatio­n session without registerin­g — just show up! If you will be purchasing a bin after the session, cash will be the only method of payment. Receipts will be provided.

Ongoing Fluvarium’s Summer Nature Camps

Registrati­on is now open for The Fluvarium’s Summer Nature Camps, designed to capture the interest and the imaginatio­n of young campers ages six through 12. Fish on Long Pond, swim at the Aquarena, relax in the forest and explore nature through engaging and thought-provoking programs. Camp cost is $165 (plus HST) and campers will be provided with a T-shirt. Limited space is available, and some weeks fill fast, so call 754-3474 to register.

Rooted in Art: Native Plants of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador

Opening reception for a non-juried exhibition presented by members of the Botanical Art Society of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador at Memorial University Botanical Garden. The exhibition runs until May 31, and is a companion show to the Art of the Plant national juried exhibition in Ottawa and worldwide exhibition­s scheduled for May 2018 in 25 countries on six continents. Presentati­ons and demonstrat­ions will be some of the programmin­g related to this exhibition.
