‘IT’S OBSESSIVE AND I DON’T KNOW WHY’

Al Mcnutt, who lives in Truro, didn’t want to miss a moment of the royal wedding coverage. The wedding service for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was scheduled for noon on Saturday — making it 8 a.m. in Nova Scotia.
“I can hardly wait for it,” said Mcnutt, in the days before the wedding. “I’ll be glued to the television.
“I think they’re a beautiful couple. You can see they really love one another. The way he shines when he’s with her, you can see they’re soulmates. I hope it works for them.”
Mcnutt has been fascinated with royalty for many years, and not just British royalty. He keeps up with the monarchies in Spain, Jordan, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and many others.
“There’s a real change in how they’re marrying,” he said. “They always married into royalty before, but now many of them are married to commoners.
“The younger people are taking the stuffiness out of the monarchies. You see so much vitality with Kate and William.”
He’s watched televised coverage of other royal weddings with fascination.
“With Charles and Diana, it was a really lovely wedding, but I wondered how she’d fit in,” he said. “Meghan is used to publicity and is comfortable in front of the public.
“She and Harry are a good match. She’s done things to help other people, and that’s where Harry’s heart is. They seem to like the same things.”
Mcnutt has seen the Queen four times, three of those times while she was in a car. The fourth was when he attended a Royal Garden Party as a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award. At the garden party he was close enough to touch the monarch. Of course, he knew better.
He has books and collectible items connected with royalty in every room of his house. The majority are related to the British monarchy.
“I follow the Queen and the family with a vengeance,” he said. “It’s obsessive and I don’t know why. I just find royalty intriguing.”
And being in the loop, he reminds us, though it’s currently being overshadowed by the more high-profile wedding, that Princess Eugenie’s marriage to Jack Brooksbank will take place in October. Eugenie is the second daughter of Andrew and Sarah.
