Was this the first ATV?

The lady operator of this British-made “Gnat Mark II” looks like she’s about to do a head-overheels (and without a helmet)! The photo is from 1969. Could it possibly be the ancestor of today’s familiar ATV? Descriptions at the time said that the Gnat could carry passengers and cargo over bogs, rough terrain and up slopes that would challenge a mountain goat. They were actually on the market in ’69 and converting British pounds to American dollars, the cost was around $1,000.
