Corner Brook’s Cormier sets record at national junior girls Skills Challenge
Provincial development team and Blomidon Golf Club member Taylor Cormier of Corner Brook captured the 2018 National Future Links Skills Challenge Driven by Acura last weekend at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.
Cormier had a fantastic day, recording a total of 295 points for a 65-point win over the second-place finisher. Not only did she win the competition, but she set the national points record in chipping and iron play, and equaled the record in putting.
Her points total of 295 has set a new national record in the junior girls division.
The event saw 24 participants from across the country compete in a four-part skills challenge designed to test putting, chipping, driving and iron play. Participants were those with the highest scores on the national leaderboard after participating in a Skills Challenge qualifying event at their local clubs. Throughout the year, over 180 clubs hosted a Future Links Driven by Acura Junior Skills Challenge, with over 3,000 junior golfers participating.
Other divisional winners in the national competition included bantam boys champion Andre Zhu of King City, Ont., bantam girls champion Lindsay Mcgrath of Milton, Ont., juvenile boys champion Matis Lessard of Québec City, juvenile girls champion Alissa Xu of King City, Ont., and junior boys champion Gregoire Vincent of the Académie de Golf Fred Colgan in Quebec City.
Cormier and the other division winners received champion’s packages from Titleist Footjoy. As well, Cormier and Vincent have earned exemptions into their local 2019 Future Links Driven by Acura Championship.
Participants received an apparel prize pack from Cobra Golf, competed in the annual Golf Canada Junior Open on the back nine of Glen Abbey, were provided weekly grounds passes to attend this week’s RBC Canadian Open, and had the opportunity to be involved in Monday’s Golf Canada Foundation Pro-am and secure a spot in today’s Walk with a Pro event.
