Ongoing Snowshoeing
The public is invited to snowshoe at Government House. When conditions are suitable and safe, bring your snowshoes, friends and family to the grounds during the day for a winter wellness break.
9 a.m. Health and Wellness Expo
The Town of Portugal Cove-st. Philip’s (PCSP) is excited to host the first PCSP Health and Wellness Expo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Brookside Intermediate School. The event is open to people of all ages, with a focus on showcasing resources and businesses dedicated to improving physical, mental and social health. The expo will feature a trade show with over 40 healthy-living exhibitors (full list available at www.pcsp. ca), demonstrations, on-site vitals testing, and nutritious food and drinks. Throughout the day there will also be presentations from guest speakers, including keynote speaker TA Loeffleur. Booths and activities are planned for people of all ages, and there’s sure to be something for everyone. Admission is $5 and payable in cash at the door. There will also be a free child minding area on site throughout the day (restrictions apply, see website for details).

Canoeing the Terra Nova River
Paddle Newfoundland and Labrador invites the public to view a documentary film about canoeing the Terra Nova River. The film documents an attempt to be the first group to run all the rapids of the lower Terra Nova River in tandem canoe. At the start of the descent, water levels were 50 per cent higher than the group had hoped, and heavy rain during the trip increased the group’s anxiety. The story also connects two generations of paddlers, all of whom love the river. The documentary will be shown at Hampton Hall Theatre at the Ridge Road Campus of the Marine Institute. Free admission.

Sinfonia 2: Be Still My Harp
Be Still My Harp, it’s Sinfonia 2. The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s own Sarah Veber (harp), joins the NSO Sinfonia as we start the 2019 season with beautiful music. Works include Gardner’s Concerto Grosso, Debussy’s Danse sacrée et danse profane, Mozetich’s El Dorado for harp, and Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll. Sonfonia 2 will be held at D.F. Cook Recital Hall. This is an extraordinary play about grief, closure, and moving forward. “Poison” stars Aiden Flynn (“Fun Home,” “The Weir,” “Three Days of Rain”) and Alexis Koetting (“Leave of Absence,” “A Call to Arms,” “Noises Off”). It is directed by Charlie Tomlinson (“The Drowning Girls,” “Here & Now,” “Dedication”). “Poison” is widely considered one of the most successful international theatrical hits from the Netherlands. It won the Taalunie Toneelschrijfprijs Award in 2010 for best new Dutch play. It had a critically acclaimed run in New York in 2016, and premiered in the U.K. at the Orange Tree Theatre in London. Ongoing Call for Lives Lived Segment
Each year Artsnl prepares a video montage segment called Lives Lived, as part of the annual arts awards. It’s at that point of the program that we acknowledge the talents that the arts community has lost over the last year. This is an opportunity for members of the community to forward names, a photo and a very brief note that commemorates a “life lived” in the arts. Forward information no later than Friday, March 29. Note that the segment running time may unfortunately limit the number of individuals shown during the show. The St. John’s Retired Citizens’ Association offers guitar lessons for beginners at 10 Bennett Ave. every Monday from 10:30 a.m. until noon beginning Jan. 14. Richard Harvey is an accomplished instructor and he welcomes anyone interested in learning to play guitar. The cost is just $5 per person per session.
