Broders on fire for Blades

Michael Broders of the Mount Pearl Mark’s Blades is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.

Broders had quite the weekend in the Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League last weekend, piling up 10 points in two games.

The league’s leading scorer (nine goals, 30 assists in 18 games) enjoyed a recordbrea­king performanc­e last Friday night, scoring the two quickest goals in league history, which dates back 39 years.

Broders potted a pair of goals eight seconds apart — at 1:24 and 1:32 of the first period — staking the Blades to what would be a 10-1 win over the Breakers at the Southern Shore Arena. The goals set new standards for the two fastest goals by an individual and team. Tyler Power scored for Mount Pearl again at 1:53, giving the Blades a league-record three goals in 29 seconds. Broders scored again at 5:54 with a power-play goal for the first-period hat trick. Broders wasn’t done, as he registered another fivepoint game Sunday night in Mount Pearl’s 12-5 win over the C.B.N. Stars, picking up five assists at The Glacier in Mount Pearl. Date of birth: Jan. 9, 1997
