Dust mites can trigger allergic reactions

-

Allergy symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, red skin and respiratory problems may be caused by the disintegrating bodies and waste droppings of microscopie dust mites. Research data shows that dust mites in the home are second only to pollen for causing allergie reactions.

By feeding on hair and skin we shed, dust mites thrive in warm, humid areas like the sofà, easy chair, and mainly in beds. Indeed, you may be surprised to know that the average mattress in the cleanest home is probably hosting a colony of two million mites, or more.

A specialty mattress and pillow protector will control the population growth and reduce exposure. Some such products will be labelled as a ‘Class 1 medicai device’ by Health Canada. Look for the qualifying decal on the packaging.

“By depriving the mites of heat and moisture, these uniquely formulated covers deprive them of life,” says one manufacturer’s spokesperson, Carol Weinstein. “These can be breathable, paper-thin, double-sided terry covered.” Remarkable, leading edge technology allows heat and moisture to transfer out of the mattress and pillows, it keeps liquids from seeping in, and it provides for a restful allergen free sleep. Covers are available in department stores and specialty bedding stores across Canada.
