Bingo
The St. John’s Retired Citizens Association’s bingo is held every Monday night at 10 Bennett Ave. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the games start at 8 p.m. The cost is just $5 per card. The escalating jackpot is about $1,000.
Upcoming Friendship and Fun
Join us at St. James United Church on Feb. 15 for a night of decadence and delight with our Valentine’s Day ‘Friendship and Fun’ fundraiser! A concert and a dessert party with a wine table and a silent auction. The concert at 7 p.m. will kick it off with four groups performing, including the St. James Jazz Trio and the St. John’s Gay Men’s Choir. The dessert party will follow about 8 p.m. with many fantastic desserts, more music, a wine table “raffle” and a silent auction (cash only). We are now gratefully accepting donations of gift cards, quality items and homemade desserts. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for previewing of auction items and ticket sales. Note: Please bring indoor shoes and use the side entrance. Tickets are $20 (cash only) and are limited. Life as a Mountainous Journey
TA Loeffler will entertain and inspire with a multimedia presentation of the life lessons learned from training for, reaching, and climbing the world’s highest mountains in a talk with the Positive Thinkers Club at the Bella Vista (26 Torbay Rd.) on Feb. 23. Children Upcoming Fluvarium’s Easter Camp
Connect with nature this Spring break at the Fluvarium’s nature and art camp. We have four all-day camps from April 23-26. Open to grades K-2. $35 plus HST per session. There is limited spacing and preregistration is required. Join us at the Suncor Energy Fluvarium and connect with nature through art, games and exploration. This program will include arts and crafts and discovering more about the critters in and around the Fluvarium. We will have a special guest each day and campers get outdoors daily, and stay out longer if the weather co-operates. CPFF Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group
Support groups are typically patient-directed, and are extremely helpful in fulfilling areas of need that cannot be achieved during clinical visits. Feedback from other centres across Canada has been very positive. Topics may be disease-specific, but can include anything that patients feel is relevant to them or their loved ones. The next support group meeting is on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 2-4 p.m. in the second-floor conference room of the Summit Recplex, 126 Smallwood Dr., in Mount Pearl. Theatre Upcoming Between Breaths Orchestral
Between Breaths tells the story of Dr. Jon Lien, the Whale Man, and his 20 years of work freeing whales trapped in fishing nets. Following a completely sold out run last summer, Between Breaths returns to the stage with a re-imagined soundscape! The beautiful score by The Once has been adapted by composer and arranger Duane Andrews to a full orchestral treatment. Public Lecture Upcoming Wessex Society Lecture
The next Wessex Society Lecture will be on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. at the Marine Institute. The presenters will be Dr. Don Downer, Elizabeth Scammell Reynolds, and David Quinton. Shipwrecked rounding Cape Horn in 1886, sailor Bill Downer of Fogo Island eventually returned home, married and carried his family to his sheep ranch in Patagonia. His descendants returned last summer to see the land of their ancestors. Their distant relatives, Dr. Don Downer, Elizabeth Scammell Reynolds and David Quinton will tell the tale of The Patagonian Invasion.
