Hall of Fame Cup repeat for Highlanders; Warriors regain crown
The Holy Heart of Mary Highlanders steamrolled their way through the competition to win the boys’ title, while the Waterford Valley Warriors regained the girls’ crown at the 2019 Hall of Fame Cup/elite Eight high school basketball championship held over the weekend at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre in St. John’s.
The Hall of Fame Cup is one of the top high school basketball championships in the province, together with the provincial 4A high school championships.
Tournament MVP Devon Tobin scored 16 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had 10 assists, coming just short of a triple-double, to lead the Highlanders to an easy 89-41 decision over the Gonzaga Vikings in the final Sunday morning.
Tobin also had seven steals. Caleb d’entremont, who was named to the tournament allstar team, scored a game-high 25 points.
In their other three games, Holy Heart thumped Holy Spirit 80-55, pounded Corner Brook High 110-82 and humiliated the O’donel Patriots 10272 in semifinal play.
Gonzaga defeated Waterford Valley 97-79 in their semifinal game.
Other members of the tournament all-star team were Julian Edwards of Waterford Valley High, A.J. Nash of O’donel, Matt Torraville of Gonzaga and Jacob Ryan of Gonzaga.
Waterford Valley, which won the Hall of Fame Cup in 2017, regained the title Sunday morning with a 74-68 win over O’donel.
Tournament MVP Alyssa Jenkins led the Warriors with 20 points. Katie Cousens netted 19 in a losing cause.
In semifinal play, it was the Warriors beating Holy Heart 65-56, while the Patriots downed Holy Trinity 53-44.
Cousens was named to the tournament all-star team along with Erin Long of Holy Heart of Mary, Brianna Dalton of Baltimore, Victoria Strickland of Gonzaga and Rebecca Tobin of Waterford Valley High.
