Bishop stays in Halifax, will play for Huskies
Joel Bishop has a new team, but isn’t going anywhere.
The 20-year-old St. John’s native is remaining in Halifax after being cut by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Mooseheads last week. After four years in the junior ranks, all with Halifax, he is moving on to the university level with the AUS’S Saint Mary’s Huskies.
Bishop, the brother of Carolina Hurricanes’ centre Clark Bishop, had been a popular and effective energy forward with the Mooseheads, registering 26 goals and 68 assists in 237 games, while picking up 226 penalty minutes. He had been an assistant captain last season, but lost out in a competition for three overage spots with Halifax.
The Huskies will begin their 2019-20 regular season in just over three weeks.
DONAGHEY WILL BE PART OF LIGHTNING PROSPECTS TEAM
St. John’s native Cody Donaghey is heading to Tennessee this week after being invited by the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning to be part of their team in a pre-season prospects tournament in suburban Nashville.
The 23-year-old Donaghey recently signed to an ECHL contract with the Orlando Solar Bears, a Lightning affiliate. He had spent the 2018-19 season with the Solar Bears while under contract to the NHL’S San Jose Sharks, but became a free agent earlier this summer when the Sharks didn’t offer him a new deal.
Donaghey led all Orlando defencemen with 43 points (15G, 28A), setting a franchise record by scoring by a rearguard.
Games in the prospects showcase in Antioch, Tenn., begin Saturday, with the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators providing the opposition for the Lightning.
Players report for physicals on Thursday, leading to two practice sessions and then the three-game schedule..
EX-ICECAP LOOKING FOR ONE OF HIS OLD ST. JOHN’S JERSEYS
A former member of the American Hockey League’s St. John’s Icecaps is looking for some clothing.
Hockey jerseys, to be specific. Connor Crisp, a winger played 17 games for the Icecaps over two seasons (2015-16, 2017-2017) of the team’s affiliation with the Montreal Canadiens, used his Twitter (@Connorcrispp) in search of a game-worn jersey from his time in St. John’s and from his junior days with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League.
“I am looking to buy one of my old game worn jerseys from both the Icecaps and Wolves. Anyone that may have one and are willing to part ways, I would be very grateful and happy to buy it from you! Please DM me,” tweeted Crisp on Monday.
A third-round draft pick of the Canadiens in 2013, Crisp’s professional career was plagued by injuries, including concussions that left him sidelined for much of his time in St. John’s and which eventually led to his retirement as a player last year at the age of 24.
