Rough day for local soccer teams; former Guardsman Wils Wiseman passes away

Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs struck first in the Molson St. John’s Senior Men’s Softball League final, blanking 3Cheers Bud Light Dodgers in Game 1 of the league championsh­ip series Thursday evening at Lions Park.

The Dodgers won the 2018 city league championsh­ip after knocking off the Bulldogs in the semifinals. Prior to last season, Kelly’s Pub won five straight St. John’s senior men’s league championsh­ips.

Game 2 of the series is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, with Game 3 1 p.m. Sunday.

——— Teams from St. John’s and the Burin Peninsula won their opening games in Atlantic under-13 soccer Thursday, registerin­g victories in the girls’ championsh­ip being staged in Moncton, N.B.

Closer to home, at the Atlantic U13 boys’ championsh­ip in C.B.S., the host squad and Mount Pearl weren’t as fortunate, as both teams were shut out.

In Moncton, Ellie Power scored the goal and Sydney Moyles posted the shutout as St. John’s beat New Brunswick No. 2 1-0. In the Burin Peninsula Soccer Associatio­n’s 3-0 win over New Brunswick No. 1, it was Olivia Giovannini, Rayna Edwards and Mary Haley scoring the goals.

In C.B.S., the host Strikers dropped a 4-0 decision to Halifax County, while Mount Pearl lost 1-0 to Fredericto­n, N.B.

Meanwhile, at the Eastern Canadian masters championsh­ip at King George V Park, Feildians improved to 1-1 with a 2-1 win over Quebec.

On opening-day Wednesday, the Double Blues were blanked 5-0 by Ontario. Newfoundla­nd’s other entry in the tournament, WPH 78FC, tied 1-1 with Quebec Wednesday. Danny Connolly had the 78FC goal. 78FC was idle Thursday.

Wils Wiseman, winner of six Boyle Trophies with the Guards, passed away Thursday. He was 77.

Wiseman, a Shoal Harbour native, went to high school in Clarenvill­e and started his playing career in 1957 with the Clarenvill­e All-stars. He moved to St. John’s where he joined the Prince of Wales Collegiate squad and went on to play for Guards in the St. John’s junior league.

Wiseman joined the Guards’ senior squad and was a stalwart from 1961-72, winning six St. John’s Senior Hockey League championsh­ips with the Guards’ senior team.

He also played for the St. John’s Capitals from 1964-69.

Wiseman returned to Clarenvill­e in 1972.
