Lights, cameras and action, starting Friday

Newfoundland Growlers team captain James Melindy poses for cameras during the team’s media day at Mile One Centre in St. John’s on Tuesday, when Growlers players submitted themselves for photographs and video footage to be used, among other things, for in-game and online promotions. The Growlers begin defence of their ECHL Kelly Cup title Friday night at Mile One where they will take on the Reading Royals in their 2019-20 season-opening game. The contest will also feature a championship banner-raising ceremony. The Growlers will also be receiving championship rings, but those won’t be handed out until the following weekend, when they take on the Brampton Beast at Mile One. The Growlers open with a five-game homestand, with games against the Royals Friday, Saturday and next Tuesday, and the Beast on Oct. 18 and 19.
