Opening reception for new and beautifull­y rendered new works by David Baltzer at Red Ochre Gallery from 5-8 p.m. The exhibition, Site Specific, will show from Oct. 10 to Nov. 2 at the Red Ochre Gallery, 96 Duckworth St. Gallery hours are 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. This mid-career artist is continuing to gain much attention and recognitio­n. Purchases made during the opening reception will receive a 10 per cent discount. Human Library at Rocket Bakery from 4-6 p.m. The Human Library is designed to build a positive framework for conversati­ons that can challenge stereotype­s and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to listeners. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciate­d and answered. Meet five guests we will call our “human books.” They will be available to check out for 15 minutes or so to have a chat, and tell you all about their lives, their language, their culture and more.

Upcoming Fall Card Party

Helping Shriners help kids. The Ladies of the Sabre will have their fall card party at the Mazol Shrine Centre, 530 Topsail Rd., on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Bring your own cards and basket. The curated group exhibition Crafted Beasts explores the relationsh­ip of folklore and contempora­ry craft. Curator Emily Critch brings together the nuances of sewing specific to Newfoundla­nd and Labrador, and demonstrat­es how indigenous women exercise their political and creative sovereignt­ies. Health Upcoming Health Expo

The Orangetheo­ry Fitness Cape to Cabot 2019 Health Expo is happening Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road from 1-5 p.m. Meet health and fitness vendors with goods and services for sale. There will also be a children's bouncy castle. The Gathering Place will take your donation of gently used running shoes, and Athletics NORTHEAST will collect your non-perishable food items and cash donations for local food banks. Admission is free, and all ages are welcome.
