They won’t be taking on the Riddlers, Jokers or Penguins — it’s the Railers who are in town — but the Newfoundland Growlers will be channeling their inner Caped Crusaders at Mile One Centre tonight.

This season, as part of the ECHL’S partnership with Warner Bros., each of the league’s 26 teams will play one game wearing DC character-themed uniforms.

Batman is the Growlers’ character of choice for tonight’s matchup against the Worcester Railers, and the jerseys the Newfoundland players are set to wear will be auctioned by the league during the game via Handbid, either through that company’s app or online platform (at www.handbid.com).

There will also be merchandise giveaways and character appearances.

Superman, Aquaman, The Flash and Wonder Woman are said to be some of the other teams’ choices, but they’re not limited to superheroes. Villains like the Joker and Lex Luthor are also possibilities.

This is an alternate jersey weekend for the Growlers, who will be having their own individual promotion on Saturday night, when they will be wearing the colours of the St. John’s Maple Leafs, the American Hockey League team that made the city home for 14 seasons. And there will be other different duds to come. The league is also partnering with Marvel and Nickelodeon for night’s featuring jerseys with characters from those entertainment universes.

The Nickelodeon partnership was also in place last season, when the Growlers retained their canine identity by wearing uniforms based on the Paw Patrol cartoons.

They also wore jerseys with a design based on Iron Man from Marvel comics in a February game at Mile One.
