Two on top: Blades, Renegades tied for first in SJJHL

The CBR Renegades and Mark’s Mount Pearl Blades, finalists for the Presidents Cup league championsh­ip last season, appear headed for a showdown again this season.

The Renegades won twice over the weekend, and the Blades defeated the Northeast Eagles 5-2 Sunday night, leaving the teams tied with 38 points apiece and sharing top spot in the Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League.

At Twin Rinks in St. John’s Saturday night, Tyler Nickson and Drew Stonehouse both had two goals and two assists as the defending champion Renegades thumped the Caps 8-2.

Tyler Wall also had a pair for CBR, and Nathan Tucker and Brad Connors potted singles. Murray Byrne and Matthew Mills scored for St. John’s.

Friday night at the Trinitypla­centia Stadium in Whitbourne, Nickson capped off a three-goal game with a goal at 4:17 of overtime as the Renegades beat the Trinitypla­centia Flyers 5-4. Nick Gosse and Jacob Gill netted singles. Ethan Salsman enjoyed a three-goal game for the Flyers. Justin Edison also scored for the home side.

At the Jack Byrne Arena Sunday, scoring for the Blades were Riley Gill with two, Brandon Knight, Mitch Mcgrath and Jack Keough. Steve Crant and Ed Farrell replied.

Elsewhere in the junior league, at the Goulds Arena Saturday night, Cameron Forward had two goals and two assists and A.J. Doyle potted a pair as the Southern Shore Breakers doubled the Avalon Capitals 6-3. Donovan Warren and Roland Power also scored for the Breakers, while Garrett Mills had two goals in a losing cause. Jared Lush had the other Avalon goal.

Friday night at the Bay Arena, Brendan Houlihan pulled the trigger on three goals as the Breakers beat the C.B.N. Stars 8-5. Warren, Noah Dinn, Brady Genge and Riley Spurrell added singles. Cass Warren had two goals for the Stars. Also scoring for C.B.N. were Lucas Russell, Mark Barrett and Darcy Dawe.
