The son of former St. John’s athlete Scott Burt, who played college football at Boston College nearly 25 years after his father starred in NCAA water polo, has signed a free agent contract with the NFL’S New England Patriots.

Jake Burt is one of 12 undrafted rookies the Patriots have signed since the draft this week. According to ESPN’S Adam Schefter, Burt is receiving $80,000 guaranteed to sign, one of the larger guarantees for undrafted tight ends.

The 6-5, 230-pound Burt played as an NCAA red shirt graduate in 2019, making 15 catches for the Boston College Eagles. However, his last season was cut short by a broken collarbone.

According to Schefter, Burt was used scarcely in his first three seasons, but caught 15 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown as a senior.

Prior to attending Boston College, he was an ESPN Boston All-state player at St. John’s Prep.

Jake Burt was born in Calgary and raised in Lynnfield, Mass. His father is a native of St. John’s, where he played junior and senior baseball for the Guards, but most notably water polo for the NAAC (Aquarena) Bulldogs.

Scott Burt played internationally for Canada at both the junior and senior levels, including the Pan-american Games, and attended the University of California at Santa Barbara on an athletic scholarship. He earned All-american status while at Santa Barbara.

Scott Burt and his wife settled in Lynnfield, Mass. All four boys were born in Canada, including Jake’s younger brother, Declan, a tight end for Bowling Green University.
