City of St. John’s considering paving Kenny’s Pond trail

-

St. John’s city council is considering a proposal to pave the Kenny’s Pond trail.

In a June 3 release, the city said council will review an offer from the Tiffany Village Retirement Residence Partnership, the owner of both the Kenny’s Pond Retirement Living and Tiffany Village, to cost-share the project.

The project would see the 780-metre gravel trail paved with asphalt, making the trail more accessible. Coun. Ian Froude noted in the release.

“If approved by council, this upgrade will make the trail universally accessible by providing a comfortable smooth surface for users with mobility aids,” said Froude.

“We are pleased to consider this request from a local business interested in improving accessibility in our trail system.”

Council anticipates the total project cost to be about $128,000, the release said. The city would fund 60 per cent of the project with Tiffany Village Retirement Residence kicking in for 40 per cent of the project cost.

Andrea Avery, vice-president of operations and human resources for Tiffany Village Retirement Residence, said, if approved, the project will be welcomed by area seniors.

“It will benefit the residents of Kenny’s Pond and Tiffany Village as well as the many seniors that reside in the area,” said Avery.

“Tiffany Village Retirement Residence Partnership is thrilled to be able to partner with the City of St. John’s to improve Kenny’s Pond trail for all St. John’s residents.”
