Things perhaps remain a little slow with the pandemic still present, although it was a busy week on the local sports highlight front.

At Lions Park, Doug Marshall of 3 Cheers Pub Miller Lite joined exclusive company in the St. John’s Molson Senior Men’s Softball League last Sunday when he collected his 300th career regular season hit.

It came in a 16-2 win over The Bigs making Marshall the 19th player in the history of the senior league to have that many hits.

Blair Langmead is the alltime hits leader with 512.

The Senior Men’s Softball circuit was established in 1957.

HOLE IN ONE

Keeping with softball, Softball Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Famer Ron Boland continues to enjoy athletic success since stepping away from the fastpitch game.

Boland, one of the finest pitchers this province has seen, recorded a hole-in-one at Clovelly Golf Course May 27 while enjoying a round of golf with his brothers Kevin, Don and Leo. Ron registered the ace on the Fourth hole on the The Osprey course — a Par-4 hole — with a 313-yard drive.

BRILLIANT ON THE BEAM

Megan Skinner was virtually brilliant in the Gymnastics Canada National Championship held May 14-23. The event was held virtually this year due to COVID-19 in St. John’s.

Competing in the Cygnus Gymnastics space at the former Memorial Stadium in St. John’s, Skinner, who is from the Cygnus Club, finished 16th all-around and was eighth on the balance beam.

She was also successful in being named to the Canadian High Performance list, which is comprised of the top female gymnasts in the country.

FOCUS ON YOUTH AWARDS

On June 17 the City of Mount Pearl held its 31st Annual Focus on Youth Awards.

The event was held virtually for the first time.

The Focus on Youth Awards celebrates the contributions of youth in the areas of sports, arts, science, self-improvement, and volunteerism.

Athletes of the Year were swimmer Megan Holden and multi-sport athlete Kalan Noonan.

Team of the Year was the O’donel High Senior Boys Volleyball Team.
