N.L. hospice launches fundraising campaign
GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR — Lionel Kelland Hospice launched a campaign to raise the remainder of money needed to complete a 10-bed facility that will house Newfoundland and Labrador’s first residential end-of-life care facility.
In a news release, Lionel Kelland Hospice staff said the project is nearing completion and released details of the hospice design.
The Lionel Kelland Hospice project, based in Grand
Falls-windsor, is expected to cost $7.6 million, and the group in charge of it has already secured 65 per cent of that amount.
A public fundraising campaign, Every Moment Matters, has been launched to raise the balance through the efforts of Shelley Woolfrey, who praised the funding partners and private donors whose contributions have laid a very solid foundation.
The Every Moment Matters campaign team is made up of business and community leaders.
Woolfrey, a nurse turned entrepreneur, said the campaign holds opportunities for everyone, including individuals, businesses, community organizations and municipalities.
“Compassionate care for people at the end of life means enabling them to live their final moments as they wish — in peace and surrounded by those they love,” she said.
The release said the former Presentation Centre turned hospice will open in 2022.
When fully staffed and open, the hospice’s multidisciplinary team will focus on pain management and control of symptoms, as well as meeting the emotional, cultural, spiritual and practical needs of all residents and their families, notes the release.
The hospice will offer a kitchen and family dining room and indoor and outdoor gathering areas.
The release said construction is expected to begin in early fall.
