Sunny weather and some fine results at provincial amateur championships
Playoffs featuring the same two players decided two men’s titles at Terra Nova
Great weather, a three-peat, a new women’s champion and playoffs between the same two golfers to decide a couple of men’s crowns were among the highlights of the 2021 Royal Lepage provincial amateur golf championships which concluded earlier this week at Terra Nova Golf and Resort in Port Blandford.
The playoff for the provincial men’s amateur title involved Robbie Squires from Bally Haly Country Club in St. John’s and Jason Stagg of Humber Valley Resort on the province’s west coast. The two golfers concluded three days of competition with 229 totals. Stagg took the crown on the second hole of the playoff.
C.J Nolan of Bally Haly finished third.
A playoff behind Stagg and Squires was also needed to decide the men’s mid-amateur winner. In this case, Squires won the crown on the first hole of the playoff.
Nolan and Ryan Aucoin of Glendenning Golf in St. John’s tied for third with three-day totals of 231.
Former junior champion Taylor Cormier of Blomidon Golf Club in Corner Brook took her first-ever Newfoundland and Labrador women’s amateur championship with a 258 total that put her 10 strokes ahead of 2019 and multiple-time champion Kathleen Jean of the Harmon Seaside Links in Stephenville.
Kelly Brown of Bally Haly Country Club had a finalround 92 for a three-day total of 281 to capture third place.
Results from other provincial championships held during the week:
• Chuck Conley won for senior men’s championship for the third straight time, carding a 77 in the final round for a threeday total of 233 and a twostroke win over Steve Snow of Clovelly Golf in St. John’s
Eddie Bearns of Bally Haly secured a third-place finish with a three-day total of 239.
• Jean’s 268 total gave her a two-stroke victory over Janet Mills of Bally Haly in the ladies’ mid-amateur competition. Deborah Delaney of Glendenning Golf finished in third place with a three-day total of 278.a
• the senior ladies’ event was conducted over two rounds, with Jean’s 182 giving her a second straight championship; she had won in 2019 and there was no provincial golf competition in 2020 because of the pandemic.
Mills and Bobbie Boland of Bally Haly finished second and third, respectively.
During the event, it was announced the next Royal Lepage Provincial Amateur Championships will be held at Bally Haly Country Club July 10-13, 2022.
