Persistence Theatre to stage ‘The Mirror’

-

A St. John’s feminist charity is going to put on a live production of “The Mirror” at LSPU Hall starting on Oct. 21.

In an Oct. 14 news release, Persistence Theatre said the production will be the flagship initiative of the Votes for Women 100 year-long project, which reflects upon the 100 years since women in St. John’s first achieved the right to vote in municipal elections.

Persistence Theatre commissioned award-winning writer Trudy J. Morgan-cole to write the play, which features the story of Armine Nutting Gosling.

Gosling, who died in 1942, was a pioneering reformer and feminist who fought for women in Newfoundland to gain the right to vote.

The local production employs more than two-dozen local theatre practitioners, most of which identify as women or non-binary, and operates under an overall budget of $75,000.

Alison Woolridge will star as Armine Nutting Gosling. Actors Terri Andrews, Sharon King-campbell, Brian Marler, Wendi Smallwood and Bridget Wareham are also in the cast.

Persistence Theatre producing artistic director Jenn Deon is directing the production, with intimacy and movement direction by Lynn Panting, set and lighting design by Renate Pohl, costume design by Alison Helmer and sound design by Kathryn Burke.

“The Mirror” will play at 8 p.m. from Oct. 21- 24, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Oct. 23. Tickets cost $45, or $25 for the matinee performance, and are limited to people who have been double-vaccinated.

Tickets must also be booked in groups to ensure social distancing. Tickets are available by phone at 709753-4531 or in person from the LSPU Hall box office, 3 Victoria St., open from 12-5 p.m. daily.
