Passed peacefully away on October 17, 2021 at Tiffany Village. Alex was born in St. John’s in 1931, to Jack & Frances (Manning) Martin, the second of eleven children and predecease­d by his wife Mary (nee Carroll) in 2003. He is lovingly remembered by his six children: John (Karyn Tucker), Regina (John Maguire), Edmund (Mary Lou Browne), Ellen (Philip Cook), Alex (Constance Ryan) & Marie (Leslie Budden). He was devoted to his sixteen grandchild­ren, John (Tina), Daniel (Jill), Alexander, & Susan (Justin); Ian & Kathleen (Matthew); Jeff, Paul (Katy), Sean (Jane) & David (Anneliese); Matthew, Heather & Peter; Samantha (Robert), Stephanie & Michael. He was Great Grandfathe­r to: Ryan, Connor, Liam, Alexander, Karolina, Harriett, Anna, Will, Juliana, & Theodore. Alex is predecease­d by brothers: Jim, Gerard & Larry & sisters Carmel Stevenson & Madonna Peterson. Left to mourn are brothers, John (Emma), Steve (Mary), sisters, Marie (Jerry Jurgens), Geraldine (Cyril Russell) & Annette (Bud Coultas). Also left to mourn are his sisters in law: Catherine, Peggy & Bernice Martin and his wife’s sisters, Teresa Maccormac & Vera Rowe. Over his career, Alex worked as a Hospital Executive Director in four provinces including The Central Newfoundla­nd Hospital in Grand Falls Windsor from 1967 -1978. In 1985 he & his wife Mary started an Upjohn Home Care business in St. John’s that they operated until retirement. Alex is a past president of the Newfoundla­nd Hospital Associatio­n, a Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administra­tors, a Fellow and Board of Regents Member of the American Academy of Medical Administra­tors, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health. He was a member of the St. John’s Curling Club, a volunteer at the Gathering Place and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. We are very grateful to the staff of Tiffany Village where he has resided for the last six years and always received loving & profession­al care. Thank you to Dr. Amanda Coleman, Dr. Roger Butler & Denise Cahill N.P. for his medical care over several years. Resting at Cauls Funeral home Lemarchant Rd. Family visitation only. Mass of Christian burial will take place from St. Pius X on Tuesday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m. Internment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in his memory can be made to The Gathering Place, St. John’s or Lionel Kelland Hospice Centre, Grand Falls-windsor. Lovingly remembered, forever missed.
