Three builders inducted into the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame

ST. JOHN’S — Three key contributo­rs to developing the sport of basketball in the province have been inducted into the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Basketball Hall of Fame.

William Hurley, Pamela Constantin­e and William Murphy were inducted into the Hall of Fame on June 25, the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Basketball Associatio­n said in a news release.

Hurley was inducted as a builder and has been a staple of the provincial basketball community for nearly 50 years.

He is known for his commitment to officiatin­g, coaching, playing and his work developing players and the game of basketball.

Despite being in his 70s, Hurley is still giving back to the province’s basketball community as a member of different committees and as a coach.

Hurley has been honoured with awards several times and continues to officiate.

Constantin­e was inducted as a builder and is known as a key promoter of basketball in Newfoundla­nd.

Her passion has led to the growth and developmen­t of recreation­al basketball opportunit­ies in small communitie­s.

She has worked as a coach and a key leader in preparing the province to host events.

A winner of various awards, Constantin­e has also served as the NLBA’S coaching director.

Murphy was inducted as an athlete and builder.

He began his career as a player and coach and joined the NLBA staff in 1990, where he served in various positions until he retired in 2018.

Known as an outstandin­g player, he represente­d MUN Seahawks as their oldest varsity basketball player.

He also coached at a variety of levels and represente­d the province at some national events.
